ABOUT
US
Due to observation by guests who have consistently visited and
lodged with us, Anchor lodged has become tagged as "A Place of
Peace and Comfort". The original building was built in 1908. The
old house, made from original hand-dressed sandstone, boasts
high pressed steel ceilings and wooden floors and retains a
distinctive old-world charm.
Yeoville, in which we are located, is a suburb of Johannesburg,
in the province of Gauteng, South Africa. Yeoville was
proclaimed as a suburb in 1890 (four years after the discovery
of gold led to the founding of Johannesburg) by Thomas Yeo
Sherwell, who came from Yeovil in the United Kingdom. The area
was advertised as a 'sanitarium for the rich' in which the air
was purer because it was up on a ridge overlooking the dirty,
smoke-filled mining town that had sprung from nothing out of the
(then) Transvaal bushveld. Today, apart from the rich, it has
attracted many of the waves of migrants through all races,
social classes and skills coming to South Africa from abroad,
seeking a new life.
